Dock & shoreline maintenance basics
Keep your Finger Lakes waterfront in great shape year-round.
Finger Lakes docks live a hard life: freeze-thaw ice pressure in winter, wake chop all summer, and constant UV on the decking. A little routine care doubles the life of the structure.
Fall: pull removable sections before ice-in, inspect every through-bolt and bracket for corrosion, and store hardware dry. Permanent piling docks should have ice deflectors checked and any wraps replaced.
Spring: reset sections, replace any decking boards that softened over the winter, and hit the whole structure with an oxygen-bleach cleaner (never chlorine bleach — it kills lake vegetation you actually want).
Shoreline: New York's shoreline rules under the DEC require permits for most hardening work (rip-rap, seawalls, retaining walls) within the regulated zone. Softer solutions — native plantings, biolog toes, terraced natives — often don't require the same paperwork and hold up better against wake.
If you're buying a lake home in Ithaca, Geneva, or Canandaigua, ask for the dock's original permit and any DEC correspondence. Unpermitted structures become the new owner's problem fast.
